PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
CoreTech Optical, Inc. 06/01-Present
Requested by fellow JDS Uniphase associates to participate in founding CoreTech Optical, Inc. Responsible for all mechanical and electro-mechanical designs for all products. Designed and built several optical inspection stations utilizing vacuum preload air-bearing stages, some with multiple lead screws per axis. Designed and built a solar simulator cell with manually operated X,Y, Z stages per customer request. Designed a miniature pick and place mechanism that functions in the optical path for the 4-sided inspections of laser diode chips.
KDC Consulting 11/01-Present
Solve many customer issues through conception, design, production drawings, bill of materials and instructions as needed. Build many prototype products and interface with manufacturing facilities domestically and overseas. Secure Intellectual Property by producing utility patent applications, complete with word construction, drawings and claims to the United States Patent and Trademark specifications. File for Trademarks also with the USPTO. Produced several video, animation and visualization productions.

Designed
and built two automated process machines for fiber optic components assembly,
one installed locally and one in Ottawa, Canada. Used 19-stepper axis to strip,
cleave, clean and insert fibers, orient, glue and heat cure into glass tubes.
The process uses recirculating pallets designed for the application.
Subcontracted the software, electrical panel assembly and wiring. Pictures and Windows Media

HMT Technologies, Fremont, CA 05/97-03/00
Equipment Engineer
Responsibilities for incorporating automation through finished goods. This includes designing and/or procuring equipment for material handling, labeling, bagging and boxing. Working with bar-coding, printer applicators, automated bagging equipment, automated ultrasonic and parts cleaning systems, automatic wrappers etc. Assisted the maintenance dept. by maintaining the kiss-buff and finished goods area processes.
Measurex Corporation, Cupertino, CA 08/87-04/97
Design Specialist/Manufacturing Engineer
Primary responsibilities have included the design and construction of robotic systems with implementation locally and overseas, several cost reduction projects, numerous test fixtures, tooling, and new product designs. Have assisted many departments and individuals in achieving professional results with projects.

187 ml Bottling System - Designed and built a case oriented bottling system that included case unloader, indexing bottle track, 24 bottle filler, 1 into 6 cap feeding system, 6 head/4 position capper with articulating 3 spindle drive with remote mounted motor. System controlled by an Allen-Bradley PLC. Used experience in design, drafting, and general mechanical engineering. Worked with outside contractors and supervised in-house personnel to fabricate the prototype machine. Designed and installed a secondary exchange refrigeration system, supervised bottling line and maintenance departments.

PROJECT LIST FOR MEASUREX CORP.
Robotic Alignment System with CD Compensation - Designed and built two
production robots to provide manufacturing support. One system installed in
locally and one in Ireland. Eight axis of rotation are controlled by two
stepper systems, machine positioning is controlled by a single axis servo
system. System designs include air bearing support carriages, four spindle
linear drive for loading. An onboard PC, monitor, printer and keyboard provide
the control and operator interface.
Automatic Caliper Cleaning Systems - Designed and built three models of caliper
cleaners. The first utilizes a “belt sander” concept, using a nylon belt, a
pump and reservoir system dispensing kerosene, electrical support box and
articulating arm mounting system. The second is a larger version, floor mounted
model that accommodates more configurations and requires a field-spliced belt.
The third model was a “spritzer” model imbedded in the caliper gauge.
Automatic Web Splicing Tool - Tool splices nylon seatbelt webbing to form an
endless belt used in the caliper cleaners. Prior technologies made a seam of
double material thickness. The dies melt and form the splice, extruding excess
material that is trimmed after tool is removed from the splice.
Dynamometer Burn in Fixture - Designed and built a regenerative drive system used to test gearbox assemblies.
Counters are used to verify encoder function.
Robotic Laser Alignment System - Designed and built a first generation computer
controlled laser alignment system. Units installed in Cupertino and Ireland. PC
based control, air bearing transport control, weighted drive cart and 4 socket
wrenches.
Track Slotting Machine Tool - Designed and built two prototype machines to
machine slots in fiberglass track. Tool machines 40’ tracks and utilizes a dual
spindle air motor design with X,Y,Z-axis, custom designed cutters analog
feedback of stage positions. Controls are made with an Omron PLC. Units
installed in Hayward, CA and Ireland.
Horizontal Belt Drive and Cost Reduced Track Mounting System - The drive system was
designed to replace a problematic vertical belt drive system. The Track
mounting system saved money and paved the way for robotic alignments. Track
slotting tool was a key to implementation.
Strength Sensor for Paper Measurement - Designed and built a strength sensor to
overcome problems with the current design. Including molded diaphragm seal,
miniaturized load cells, water-cooled head packages indexing wheel positioner
and thermally isolated wheel position sensor.
Numerous Production and Test Fixtures - Basis weight burn in
fixtures, quick connecting test point module, Formation sensor test stand,
X-ray sensor test stand, modular head test fixtures, off-line cal test
fixtures, color sensor setup fixture, wire calendar test stand, designed remote
resurfacing fixture, dolly stabilization cams, U-beam drill fixture, Isotherm
scanner cover fixtures.
Hydraulic Press for Production - Designed and built a hydraulic press system,
including steel rule die press, hydraulic system, frame and material handling
system for the production of Kapton windows.
